Milan: Mother, father, daughter escape fire, are temporarily displaced
Jeffrey Galm, second assistant chief for the Milan Fire Department, said they had safely evacuated along with their cat before firefighters arrived. Units were dispatched to a residence around at 3 p.m. for a possible chimney fire, he said, and would likely remain on the scene until around 7:30 p.m.
Orange flames engulfed an exterior wall and part of the roof, sending plumes of dark smoke into the air. The fire was contained to the upstairs bedrooms, attic and roof, Galm said, but the building is no longer hospitable from fire and water damage.
The homeowners received assistance on the scene from the American Red Cross.

Despite the damage, Galm said firefighters made an “excellent stop.
“The homeowners,” he said, “were able to retrieve a lot of personal effects.”
The cause of the fire hasn’t been determined but the Dutchess County Fire Investigation Division was on the scene Sunday evening. The fire was ruled “not suspicious,” Galm said.
About 45 firefighters from Milan, Red Hook, Rhinebeck and Livingston fire departments battled the blaze, he said.
