House fire in Milan leaves family of three homeless
Milan >> Firefighters managed to contain damage from a house fire on Sunday to an upstairs bedroom, attic and roof, but a family of three was left temporarily homeless, authorities said.
The Milan Fire Department and Dutchess County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched in response to a report of a possible chimney fire just before 3 p.m. Sunday. Milan Fire Chief Kurt Mizgier, the first to arrive on the scene, found flames showing through an exterior wall and the roof.
A second alarm brought additional firefighters from Red Hook, Rhinebeck and Livingston fire departments. Jeffrey Galm, an assistant fire chief with Milan, said about 45 firefighters were on the scene.
“Firefighters did an excellent job” limiting the fire damage to the upper floor, Galm said, but the house was left uninhabitable, with water damage throughout.
The couple and their daughter who lived there managed to escape with their cat before firefighters arrived, authorities said. They were being assisted by the Red Cross.
The cause of the fire was not immediately determined, but it was not considered suspicious, Galm said. Dutchess County fire investigators remained on the scene Sunday evening.
